Wonga Swinger does the double at Hickstead

Tori Cannon & Wonga Swinger (6)

Retired racehorses had their moment in the spotlight today at Hickstead, with the finals of the Tattersalls RoR Ridden Show Series Championships. And for the first time ever, one horse reigned supreme in both the Amateur and Open finals: Wonga Swinger, ridden by owner Tori Cannon.

Though they won the Amateur Final last year, this is their first time taking the top spot in the Open Final as well. “I don't have any words – what a horse!” said Tori. “He's been amazing. He was foot-perfect in the ring, and really came alive – and it was just great having that audience. Wow, what a buzz!”

Wonga Swinger was bought from Goffs Sales in Doncaster as a four-year-old by Tori’s husband, former jump jockey and now-trainer Sam Thomas, who then ran the horse first in point to points and latterly under rules.

Tori got to know the horse when he was still in training: “I try to ride out most mornings, just to keep fit,” she explained. When the idea was floated that he might be a candidate for the next round of sales, she stood her ground. “I said, ‘it’ll be divorce if you do!’” she laughed. “So now he’s mine, and I’ve had him for four seasons, and he literally does everything – anyone could ride him.”

Third-year Newcastle University student Perdy Dabliz was delighted to take victory in the Hickstead Ladies Sidesaddle Championship with Welcome First Edition. The gelding belongs to Perdy’s sister Sasha, who is currently travelling in Australia, so Perdy has taken over the ride. “This is very much an amateur hobby thing for us, so I’m so chuffed – I can’t quite believe it,” said Perdy. “We haven’t done a lot this season; it’s been a bit hit or miss, so this is a real surprise. My sisters and I hunt through the winter, and every year we have to bring him back to the showing mindset, but it’s been great fun!”

Amanda Picillo took the Agria Supreme Hack Championship with Dare To Dream II – her first victory in the Longines International Arena. “My mum bred this horse, and it’s just an absolute thrill to win on a homebred,” said Amanda. “He’s the result of 30 years of breeding – but they’ve not all been as good as him! We’ve just taken it slowly with him, but he’s really come into his own. His manners are impeccable – he always tries 110%, so we’re absolutely thrilled.”
