Hickstead’s cross-country training course will reopen for its fifth season on 6 October.
Since Hickstead opened its all-weather schooling course in the autumn of 2019, it’s been a huge hit – with nearly 12,000 bookings made since then. Feedback from riders has been excellent, with plenty of praise for the superb footing and array of fences. Locally-based Olympic event riders Pippa Funnell and Gemma Stevens are among the regular visitors to the course.
The cross-country is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the South of England, covering a site of 4.4 acres. It includes two huge arenas linked together with an all-weather track, plus the large Equine America Water Complex. There is also a steps complex of varying heights, plus dykes, banks and ditches.
There are around 90 fences in total, with around one-third of these 80cm or lower, making it ideal for novice riders or young horses. But there’s also plenty to challenge professional riders, with some more difficult questions and larger fences suitable for those competing at advanced level.
The course has been designed by an accredited course builder, and it is regularly changed throughout the season to keep it fresh and interesting for repeat visitors.
The Andrews Bowen surface means the facility offers excellent going throughout the winter months. A visit to Hickstead is the perfect way to work on your horse’s fitness, prepare for the eventing season, or even just to add some fun and variety into your horse’s routine. The course is available for exclusive use hire for training clinics.
Hickstead also has a separate show jumping schooling course that is available throughout the winter months except for during Arena Polo tournaments. The course has been designed by a British Showjumping course builder, and it is available to hire for £60 per hour with up to six horses allowed per session.
